Review:
John Hawkes continues to amaze with his chameleon-like performance of unusual characters. This time he plays Mark Obrien, 36-year-old polio victim who has spent his life in an iron lung horizontally. Based on a true story, a romantic poet and Obrien, who had never had sexual experience. After consulting his priest (William H. Macy's father embodies perfectly radical Berkeley), the involvement of a therapist and hooks up with a sexual surrogate, Helen Hunt. Their meetings in the tender heart of the film, and the audience on a journey of self-Marc awareness and discovery. Hawkes is simply amazing. It infuses the character with innocence, hope and wry humor into what can only be described as a tour de force performance. Hunt is equally adept in his role, combining professionalism, playfulness, sensuality and mercy consecutive sessions requiring full nudity. Both actors are courageous in their quest for truth and humanity and deliver Oscar-quality performances, sensitive direction thanks to writer / director Ben Lewin.
